Tour of Cape Fear Public Utility Plant

  • Cape Fear Public Utility Plant 407 Hilton Street Wilmington, NC, 28401 United States (map)

Join the Sierra Club for a tour of CFPUA’s Sweeney Water Treatment Plant. Operating since 1943, the Sweeney Water Treatment Plant is CFPUA’s largest system – providing water to about 80% of its customers – including Wrightsville Beach.  This newly expanded, state-of-the-art facility treats water taken from the Cape Fear River and distributes safe, clean drinking water to New Hanover County residents. Its newest Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration facility is highly effective at treating drinking water for PFAs and removing them to at or near non-detectable levels. Learn more about the water treatment process and the plant’s history by participating in this informative, interactive tour.  We will meet at the Sweeney WTP at 9:45am and will begin our tour at 10:00am. There will be plenty of time for questions. Closed toe shoes are required and please no flowing clothing.
