Inter Basin Transfer Request from the Lower Cape Fear River to Fuquay-Varina

The Town of Fuquay-Varina is requesting an Inter Basin Transfer (IBT) of 6.17 million gallons of water per day (MGD) from the Lower Cape Fear River (LCFR) to use and not return but to discharge into the Neuse River. Fuquay-Varina is not planning to return the water to the LCFR due largely to expense, though several evaluations suggest this expense is much less than projected in the proposed plan.

The loss of these 6.17 MGD risks our communities’ water supply and for the health of our local environment - low water affects the spawning of important fish species & may increase pollution concentration in our supply. This is especially critical in periods of drought, which are becoming more likely due to climate change, without clear planned action to prevent this.

We, the community members who rely on this water source and live in this environment can speak out about our concerns - by stating these concerns as well as demanding we get a public hearing in this area. The closest planned public hearing is in Fayettville, NC ~2 hour drive each way.
