Proposed Wilmington Harbor/Cape Fear Deepening Project Update
by Linda Schoeni, Cape Fear Sierra Club Conservation Chair
The US Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District's Environmental Impact Study (EIS) report is scheduled to be published some time this fall. This important plan examines different alternatives for the NC State Port Authority's plan to make room for larger container ships' ability to get to and from the Wilmington port. The Port Authority wants to deepen the harbor from 42 to 47 feet, widen the channel in multiple areas and extend the ocean entrance to the river. Once the draft study is published, the Corps will open a 45 day public comment period as part of the required process in creating the final document.
Roger Shew wrote an informative article for Eagles Island Nature Park about the project that provides insightful information citing the potential full impact of the project. You can read the article here. The Cape Fear Sierra Club (CFSC) encourages the greater Cape Fear region community to participate in this review process as the decisions made regarding this project will have significant future impacts, environmental and otherwise, in the region.
The North Carolina Sierra Club and several other environmental organizations, including Cape Fear River Watch, Southern Environment Law Center, NC Coastal Federation and Audubon Society to name a few, will be reviewing the report and providing comments on the proposed project. CFSC will be sharing ongoing details and information in our newsletter, website, social media and meetings. Please be sure to look for these updates as they become available.
