REMINDER:
Monthly Speaker Presentation
Our Monthly Speaker Presentations will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6:15 pm. They will continue on the second Tuesday of each month. You can find the speakers in our monthly newsletter or on our website.
When: Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6:15 pm
Where: Halyburton Park, 4099 S. 17th St., Wilmington
Speaker: N.C. Rep. Deb Butler leads off our presentation with a program centered on this year's legislative trends and legislation underway for the fall. She will discuss environmental legislation she has supported and how important it is for Sierra Club members to get involved in the 2026 elections NOW and how we can do that.
Deb Butler represents House District 18, a position she has held since 2017. She has been endorsed by the NC Sierra Club each time she has run for office. She has been a vocal leader on environmental issues, particularly around the fight for clean water in the wake of PFAS contamination in the Cape Fear River. Deb is a founding member and a co-chair of the NC Progressive House Caucus.

NEW EVENT
*** Wood Pellet Boat Trip ***
Please join us for the very important and educational boat trip. If you haven't been aboard for any of the past free wood pellet informational tours from the deck of the Henrietta, here is your chance! One hundred and sixty acres of North Carolina forests are being clearcut every day and then pelletized for shipment to the DRAX Energy Corporation to be burned in England as clean energy. This is greenwashing in its most egregious form.
Make your reservation now for our Sept. 20 tour to find out what the Enviva Corporation and DRAX Energy are doing to our forest resources in Eastern NC. Click here for more info and to reserve your spot.
YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED!
Comment NOW to protect roadless areas in NC and nationwide!
The Trump administration wants to revoke the "Roadless Area Conservation Rule," an extremely popular and important 2001 policy that protects nearly 60 million acres of the wildest parts of our national forests. Help protect wildlife, water, and climate by keeping our forests development-free by submitting your comments by Sept. 19 via this Sierra Club form. Walk with a Purpose
We had a great Sierra Club event on Aug. 16, walking 4.5 miles along the beach from Ft. Fisher to Kure Beach and back while picking up trash along the way. Saving the ocean from all that trash! Thanks to Lauren Hollett-Mott for organizing it and to all those who joined. Perfect day for a morning walk on the beach. This was our second “Walk with a Purpose” event. More to come.
New Walk Event
On Friday, Sept. 26, we will have a guided walk on the Basin Trail at Fort Fisher Beach. Park Ranger Stephanie will take us on the trail to the observation deck overlooking Zeke's Island explaining the different environments and habitats along the way. Click here for times and to sign up.
New Hanover County "Treasure Island"
New Hanover County Recycling and Solid Waste has a new program called Treasure Island that focuses on keeping usable material out of the landfill and giving it to the public. Treasure Island will open to the public on the second Saturday of every month.
Materials are stored inside a garage at the Recycling and Solid Waste headquarters, located at 3002 Highway 421 North in Wilmington. Each household is allowed to claim up to 15 items per visit. Click here for more information.
