Another Round?

First, we would love to start with giving a HUGE thank you to our first speakers, Kemp Burdette (Cape Fear River Watch) and Roger Shew (UNCW). Their insight into the status and impact of the proposed port expansion project on the Cape Fear River was an amazing opportunity to get to hear! Approaching the topic from two different perspectives was particularly helpful and set the stage for many questions from the floor. In addition to learning of the environmental destruction (both ecological and geological) we also learned of the ‘human’ toll (fishing, city revenue, tourism) that will result from the proposed increase in width and depth of Cape Fear river.

With that we are now look forward to inviting everyone to our next Green Drinks evening at Waterline Brewery on Wednesday, August 30th at 6:00pm!

We will be starting at 6:00pm for socializing, first presentation begins at 6:30pm. Our wonderful speakers for this month are Bonnie Monteleone, executive director of Plastic Ocean Project and Dr. Ralph Mead, a professor at UNCW who's focus is on the advancement of research of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS). Our focus will be Pollutants in our Cape Fear River: The physical and chemical evolution of this problem and ways it can be resolved.

Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the Q & A session following each presentation, and enjoy the ‘proactive energy’ that fills a room full of like-minded souls addressing an environmental issue. We can't wait to see you all soon!

Great Grandfather Wilderness Weekend Camporee (G2W2)

FRI, JUN 24 AT 12:00 PM, MORTIMER, NC

By: North Carolina Sierra Chapter

North Carolina Sierra Chapter Outings leaders have planned a camping/hiking weekend June 24-26 to explore potential wilderness and other areas on the Grandfather District of the Pisgah National Forest. Dubbed the "Great Grandfather Wilderness Weekend Camporee," or G2W2, the group outing will provide multiple opportunities to become familiar with some outstanding wild areas within the Grandfather District. We will be camping near the Mortimer area at a base camp and taking day hikes from there.

Group dinner of hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers and fixin's on Saturday night is included in the camping cost. Participants will arrange for their own transportation (ride sharing is encouraged) and camping gear. Details will be provided upon registration. Or contact capefearsierraclub@gmail.com for more information.

Unfortunately, tickets are non-refundable.

Conservationists have asked the Forest Service to consider the whole area as a new National Recreation Area with a variety of uses incorporated within. Imbedded in the District are two Congressionally designated Wilderness Study Areas, Lost Cove and Harper Creek created by the 1984 NC Wilderness Bill.

The weekend is planned as a boots-on-the-ground educational experience to engage Sierra Club members and non-members on the exceptional backcountry value and quality of this area, and how they can engage in the currect Pisgah and Nantahala Forest Plan Revision process, the outcome of which could affect how these areas are managed.

Full Moon Potluck and

Hands Across the Sand Combo Event

May 21, 2016

To express our continued concern over the issue of leasing and drilling offshore in the US and other countries, we’ll join hands for a photo to demonstrate our opposition to dirty fossil fuels extraction. This gathering serves as a celebration in support of the Federal government's decision to ban offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean through 2022 as well as a protest to demonstrate our continued push to permanently protect the Atlantic. This will take place 11:30am at Crystal Pier, Wrightsville Beach.

Later in the day, we will meet for our annual Full Moon Potluck at Wrightsville Beach Access 4 at 6:00pm. Bring a dish to share, utensils, chairs or blankets, and beverages as we celebrate the victory over offshore oil drilling in the Atlantic and watch as the moon rises for the night.

A.R.T. (Adaptive Reuse Tour) Downtown Wilmington

Wilmington's downtown is home to 300 years of history.  The history and future rely on the Adaptive Reuse of buldings to keep the history alive, but allow for new uses.  This gives new life to historic buildings and keeps materials out of landfills.

This 3 mile round trip walk is scheduled for April 24th, 2016 at 2pm.  We will meet in the parking lot at Dram Tree Park at the corner of Castle and Surrey Streets.

This spot is near Waterline Brewery, which is a great case of Adaptive Reuse.  All are welcome to stop for a refreshing beverage at the end of the walk.
